NEW SONG | “But When I Do” Original by Kate Stedelbauer

This is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. The concept was inspired by the fact that, quite frankly, I don’t write about love often. It’s sprinkled here and there throughout my catalogue of original music, but overall, love and relationships have never been a driving topic for me when sitting down to write. That’s what “But When I Do” is about. Love is something I believe should not be taken lightly. Love is sacred and fragile, and when it happens, it happens, which is why you shouldn’t try and fool yourself into settling for a “lesser version” of love because you haven’t found that “real love” yet. I’ve realize that I don’t write about love frequently because I find it difficult to write lightheartedly about love. It’s always been a very deep subject for me, and I think that manifests itself in both my songwriting and my personal life choices.

“But When I Do” is my musical illustration of everything love should be, interwoven by important core values, and decorate with life’s everyday simplicities to fill in the cracks. Please take a listen, and read through the lyrics below if you want to follow along. I truly do hope y’all enjoy. Remember, friends: you’ll know when it’s the real thing.

LYRICS:

(verse 1)

this type of man, he’ll understand why I won’t take his hand while we’re on our first date

he’ll understand why I like to stay home when it rains

he’ll believe in the Son, and the sound of the blues, cause sometimes some hurtin’s alright

and we’ll dance ’round the driveway to old country tunes in his headlights

I’m not asking for much

just a soul I can touch

(chorus)

oh, cause I don’t expect none of that silver screen magic

just an old porch swing love keeping time with the classics

a warm July night, and the cool TV light keeps me stuttering

I don’t often write love songs, but when I do

I know it’s the real thing

(verse 2)

and he’ll argue with me about doing the dishes and which shade of blue we should pick for the halls

but he’ll go back and clean, and once I’m asleep he’ll paint every wall

cause I don’t want any lover, I need a bright pair of eyes

that’ll light up my path for the rest of my time

and his will be the brightest, and we’ll feel like we’re flying

(chorus)

oh, cause I don’t expect none of that silver screen magic

just an old porch swing love keeping time with the classics

a warm July night, and the cool TV light keeps me stuttering

I don’t often write love songs, but when I do

(bridge)

I’ll beg God for that special occasion

you’ll hear my voice, and you’ll show up alone

and you’ll be in the crowd, and I’ll sing this song and you’ll know

(chorus)

that I don’t expect none of that silver screen magic

just an old porch swing love keeping time with the classics

and I pray every night, that your hand held in mine keeps me stuttering

I don’t often write love songs, but when I do

I know it’s the real thing
