This is the first time in years that I’ve made real resolutions. I feel like I always lackadaisically think of a goal or two in my head each January, but I never take them super seriously or hold myself to them. Now, however, I feel that my diligence and work ethic have grown so much that this year, I have lots of goals and the motivation to accomplish them. I really do feel like this is my year. I have big dreams for my music that I’d like to achieve in 2018, and I can feel the energy and drive within my heart getting excited, ready to make things happen. Overall, it was hard to narrow all of my aspirations down to this short list, but I’ve decided that these are the five things I really want to hone in on for 2018.
My Resolutions 2018
push myself in songwriting
Obviously, this is the most important resolution because I’ve been pursuing a career as a singer/songwriter since I graduated high school in June 2016 – read more about my journey here. I feel that writing music is God’s gift to me, but I find that I don’t discipline myself on a daily basis the way that I should. Oftentimes, I find myself to be such a perfectionist that if I am not coming up with something that I like, I lack motivation to keep working on it. This year, I’m really going to push myself in my craft to write more songs, write better songs, and maintain a positive attitude when I start to feel creatively frustrated.
read more, Netflix less
I genuinely love books, but I just don’t read the way I used to. When I was a kid, I blew through books like a little brainiac, but now I find myself grabbing my laptop to binge Netflix/YouTube at the end of the day, instead of reaching for a book. I have so many books that I’d like to read, and I’ve now decided to make a conscious effort to choose pages over episodes. I read 3.5 books in 2017 (check out my post on some of those books here), so I’ll go for 5 or 6 in 2018!
learn ukulele/expand my knowledge of music theory
I got a ukulele as a gift last Christmas, and I still have not properly learned how to play it. There are so many other instruments besides guitar that I would love to play, so I will start with uke and go from there. Along with this goal, I would also really like to have a deeper understanding of the inner-workings of music through theory, so I’ve decided to bite the bullet and make a conscious effort to learn. I think this will simultaneously progress my songwriting as well.
spend less time scrolling social media
Social media is an incredible way for the modern world to connect, and it’s especially important for me and what I’m trying to accomplish career-wise. However, I often find myself avoiding work and productivity by mindlessly scrolling Instagram or Twitter, and that ish has got to stop. I hate the feeling that comes with the sudden realization that I’ve wasted half an hour on my phone doing nothing of importance. All of those minutes checking Insta here and there really do add up. This year, I’m going to try really hard to monitor my social media usage and utilize my time for more worthwhile things.
Yes, this year I will strive to be aggressive. As I said earlier in this post, I have a plethora of dreams for my music career that I’d like to achieve, and I recognize that a big part of achieving them is going to come through me waking up everyday and aggressively going after them. Kindly and humbly, but aggressively. I often struggle with confidence and shyness, and I don’t want those insecurities to hold me back this year. I want to have full belief in myself, my songs, and my ability to step out of my comfort zone confidently and fearlessly. This year, I will set out on an agressive pursuit of my dreams.
Happy 2018 friends – I hope it is the best year yet! Much love.
