If there is one thing I’m a fan of, it’s strong, talented, and sincere women in country music. Ashley McBryde is one of those women.
A friend first introduced me to her a couple of weeks ago, and I was instantly taken by the grit in her voice and songwriting alike. A sense of unquestionable veracity pulsates through her music – I swear, you can hear the honesty behind every word.
McBryde has been working in the industry for ten years now, earning her stripes, landing opening slots for Chris Stapleton and Wynonna, and even being referred to by country star Eric Church as his “favorite artist out right now that’s not out yet.” Her sound combines classic country with southern rock, making her a little more edgy than the majority of mainstream female country acts out there. Comparable to Miranda Lambert, Rolling Stone referred to her as “no bulls*** country” – a claim I have to agree with, after listening to her Spotify catalogue. Her 2016 EP, Jalopies & Expensive Guitars, has some gems on it, including “Bible and a .44” and “Luckiest S.O.B.” However, one of her latest singles, “Girl Goin’ Nowhere” has touched my heart in such a vulnerable place. In the guitar-pickin’ tune, penned by McBryde, she sings of the non-believers in her life that didn’t support her and her country music dreams. Being on my own rollercoaster journey as I pursue a career in country music, this song really hits home. The lyrics are just so honest, and though I am still very early into my career, I feel everything she is singing about. I think the song’s message is applicable to anyone pursuing any dream, in spite of haters and critics. She actually got to perform it for her Opry debut this past June, and let me tell you, that’s a performance worth watching.
It is evident that Ashley McBryde is a fierce woman of country music, and it’s only up from here. Her passion and drive for her art is so obvious through her lyrics and her performances; you can tell that she’s a hard worker with a dream that she will not give up on, and I for one am so thankful that she didn’t. I am already so inspired by her, and I cannot wait to see where she goes.
